The skin packaging process requires specialized paperboard, inks and coating, skin film, and equipment to seal and die-cut the master sheet.
Andex skin board provides high strength, low curl, and excellent film adhesion. The special paperboard has a porous (non-clay coated) surface. The printed graphics are attractive but not as vivid as blister cards (clay coated surface). The skin film enhances the graphic appearance with a slight gloss.
The heated film drapes over the master sheet, capturing and contouring around the product. It’s like the stretch wrap used in the kitchen.
The master sheet is then cut to individual cards containing your product. Keyslots, round corners, and internal die cuts may be added during the cutting process.

What is skinboard?
Skinboard is specifically a specialty paperboard, designed with tiny pores that allow air to pass through the board during the packaging phase. Following the printing process, the surface of one side of the paperboard is covered with an adhesive that works by bonding the plastic to the skinboard. Skin packaging is a carded packaging that looks similar to blister packaging; however it is different in one major way – the sealing process occurs via a vacuum-sealing machine.

Clamshell packaging is made of a one-piece container that includes two halves which are joined by a hinge area. This type of packaging is commonly designed from plastic, however it can also be made from Styrofoam, paperboard, cardboard, and recycled paper.

The plastic clamshell encloses the product on both sides and the plastic flanges (edges) can be heat sealed together.
Clamshells may be custom molded to follow the contours of an item, or serve as a clear plastic container for holding a number of small loose pieces together.

What is the thermoforming process?
Thermoforming involves applying a vacuum to stretch sheets of heated thermoplastic sheets over a mold to form a shape. Can PVC be thermoformed?

What material is used in thermoforming?
At Andex, we use PETG, RPET, and PVC materials. PETG (or polyethylene terephthalate), features excellent clarity, durability, and resistance to acids. It’s fairly easy to thermoform using PETG. RPET (or recycled polyethylene terephthalate), as it’s name implies, is a highly efficient, greener option. With RPET, you still get a strong thermoforming material, making it a great alternative to PETG and PVC. Finally, PVC (or polyvinyl chloride), is the third most used thermoplastic, is quite flexible, and has the ability to form tightly.
